Can Muslims keep pets such as cats and dogs?

“If you are concerned about break-ins and theft and that is one of the reasons why you are keeping a dog, then it is permissible. This falls under the category of keeping a dog for security reasons.”

“There is a consensus according to the four schools of thought that it is permissible to sell cats. The hadīth you refer to is as follows: Translation: I asked Jabir about the price of a dog and a cat; he said: Allah's Messenger Ṣallāhu ‘Alaihi Wa Sallam disapproved of that. (Sahīh Muslim 1569)”

“It is permissible to keep birds as pets in Shariah. However, one should not cause any pain or annoyance to them. It will also be necessary to see to the food and drink of these creatures.”

“It is permissible to keep pets that are a means of comfort, pleasure, and happiness for the owner such as a bird, cat, etc. with the proviso that its provisions are taken care of. It is Waajib upon the owner to feed the animal and spend on its needs.”
