Zakaat calculator

Work out your zakaat in rand, following the Hanafi rules set out in the fatawa below. Figures stay in this browser — nothing is sent anywhere.

Based on the fatawa linked below. Please read the sources and double-check with a Darul Ifta for your situation.

Consult a mufti for your situation. Fatawa SA is a read-only archive and issues no rulings of its own.

Nisaab and prices per gram (on your zakaat date)

Nisaab (silver standard) published by Darul Ihsan Islamic Services Centre, Durban: R17,495 — as at 23 Oct 2026, 08:00 SAST. Nisaab moves with the silver price: check the current figure with them or your Darul Ifta on your zakaat date.

Enter the gold and silver prices per gram on your zakaat date (a jeweller or your bank can tell you). They are used to value the gold and silver you own.

What you own
Jewellery included, worn or not
If you know its value instead
At selling price on your zakaat date
Loans you gave, goods sold on credit — not unpaid fees for services
The zakaatable portion
What you owe
Short-term debts, unpaid bills
Not the whole balance

The rules this calculator follows

  1. Zakaat is 2.5% of your zakaatable wealth, due when a lunar year has passed over wealth at or above the nisaab.

    Sources: Mufti Online, Camperdown, Azaadville
  2. Your zakaat date is an Islamic (lunar) date — the day you first owned the nisaab. Do not calculate on the Gregorian calendar.

    Sources: Azaadville, Azaadville, Camperdown
  3. Nisaab: the value of 612.36 g of silver. The gold nisaab is 87.48 g.

Sources: Jamiat KZN, Jamiat KZN, Ibn Masood, Ask Imaam
  4. When you own cash or other assets together with gold, the silver nisaab (the lesser) is used; the gold nisaab is used only when gold is your only zakaatable asset.

Sources: Mufti Online, Mufti Online, Ibn Masood, Camperdown
  5. Count cash at home and in the bank, foreign currency, gold, silver, money owed to you through loans or the sale of goods, and the zakaatable assets behind your shares.

    Sources: Mufti Online
  6. Gold and silver jewellery is zakaatable whether worn or put away. For plated items, find out the actual gold content from a jeweller.

    Sources: Ask Imaam
  7. Value gold at its current market value on your zakaat date — not an average over the year.

    Sources: MUBZ
  8. Trade stock is valued at its selling (market) price on your zakaat date, not cost price.

Sources: Camperdown, Azaadville, Ibn Masood, Ask Imaam
  9. Personal-use items (home, car, clothing) are not zakaatable; business furniture and machinery not for sale are not zakaatable.

    Sources: Ibn Masood, Ask Imaam
  10. Deduct debts you owe. For a long-term loan (for example a home loan or student loan), deduct only the instalments due in the coming year.

  11. Fees owed to you for services you have provided are not counted until you receive them.

    Sources: Jamiat KZN, Camperdown

Not covered by this calculator: livestock, agricultural produce, pension and retirement funds, property held for sale and business partnerships — read the fatawa on these or ask a Darul Ifta. See also: zakaat step by step, the nisaab, all zakaat fatawa.
