Question

Assalamalaikum...i wannted to know the procedure to perform qadha salat....if the number of salats missed is unknown to me...how do i perform the qadha?????

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

We commend you for realizing the importance of Salah and your intention to make the missed salah.

If you do not know the number of missed salats, then the following steps may be followed:

1. Calculate the number of fardh salah that was missed from the time one became mature till now. The witr salah are also included.

2. The qadha salah should be specified according to the day it was missed.[i] If one cannot recall which days salah was missed, then, the easiest method is to make intention of the first salah that was missed, e.g. for Zhur salah, make intention of qadha for the first Zuhr that was missed.[ii]

3. Keep record of the qadha that is performed and continue to do so until all qadha are fulfilled.

Do not be discouraged if you have many qadha salat. It is important to be consistent and have a firm intention on not missing salah again. One easy way to keep track and not feel overwhelmed is to pray one qadha salah before or after every fardh salah. By the end of the year, a big portion of one’s missed salah will be fulfilled.

May Allah Ta'ālā make it easy and help you stay steadfast on your Deen.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best.
