Is the Jumu`ah prayer valid without iqaamah?

Question

During the last Jummah Prayer at our masjid, the moazzin was getting ready to call the Iqamah but he has not yet started the iqamah. The imam mistakenly (not realizing that iqamah has not been called or forgetting that the iqamah has not yet called) started the Jamaat by saying Takbeer. Everyone then joined the imam and the salat was completed without the Iqamah.

Is the salat valid with the iqamah being called? No sajda sahaw was performed and neither the salat was repeated. Please advise?

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Your query was probably meant to be phrased as “Is the salat valid ‘without’ the iqamah being called?”

In principle, to call out the iqamah is Sunnat-e-Muakkadah (emphasized sunnah).[1] If the Imam mistakenly commenced the Jumu`ah salah before the iqamah was called, the Jumu`ah salah will be valid.[2] However, the Imam should be more observant in the future.

فقد ذكر محمد ما يدل على الوجوب فإنه قال: إن أهل بلدة لو اجتمعوا على ترك الأذان لقاتلتهم عليه، ولو تركه واحد ضربته وحبسته، وإنما يقاتل ويضرب ويحبس على ترك الواجب، وعامة مشايخنا قالوا: إنهما سنتان مؤكدتان، لما روى أبو يوسف عن أبي حنيفة أنه قال في قوم صلوا الظهر أو العصر في المصر بجماعة بغير أذان ولا إقامة: فقد أخطئوا السنة وخالفوا وأثموا، والقولان لا يتنافيان لأن السنة المؤكدة والواجب سواء خصوصا السنة التي هي من شعائر الإسلام، فلا يسع تركها، ومن تركها فقد أساء؛ لأن ترك السنة المتواترة يوجب الإساءة، وإن لم تكن من شعائر الإسلام فهذا أولى ألا ترى أن أبا حنيفة سماه سنة، ثم فسره بالواجب حيث قال: أخطئوا السنة وخالفوا وأثموا؟ والإثم إنما يلزم بترك الواجب.
