Question

Can you please clarify whether it is necessary to perform ghusl on completion of ones haidh before having relations with ones husband? Or on completion of haidh is one allowed to have relations then one can perform ghusl?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The ghusl which becomes compulsory on completion of one’s menstrual cycle is divided into two different categories[1]:

1) If the menstrual cycle lasts for ten days or more, it will be permissible for the husband to have intercourse with the wife before she performs ghusl.

2) If the menstrual cycle was according to the woman’s habit (i.e. less than ten days), the husband may have intercourse with the wife if one of the following conditions are met:

The woman performs ghusl

Adequate “time” has passed since the woman’s menstrual cycle has ended for her to perform ghusl and perform the fardh prayer of that time

However, it is preferable that conjugal relationship be carried out after the wife performs ghusl.[2]
