Fidya Fast
Question
I have a question. If my parents missed fasts when they were younger do I have to fast on their behalf to make it up for them? I paid my dad's fidya for fasts he missed but those fasts were from when he was a teen and young adult so he was well enough to fast but he never did. Do I have to make up those fast on his behalf?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
In principle, it is not possible to make up a fast on behalf of someone else, whether he be alive, deceased, healthy or sick. The only form of compensation for a missed fast on part of the deceased is Fidya.[i] Normally, the deceased should bequeath the amount of Fidya to be paid, for which 1/3 of the estate can be spend. If more than 1/3 is required, then the successors are not required to pay the extra amount from the estate. If nothing was bequeathed by the deceased, then paying Fidya will be optional. In both cases, we have great hope that Allâh in his infinite mercy will accept it as a means of salvation on part of the deceased.
