Disposing of Interest Money - How do i go about doing it?

Question

Asalamualaykum molana,

I hope you are doing well.

I had a question I wanted to ask you. I have some money which I got from interest. I got about 1000 dollars. What I want to know is what should I do with the money accumulated from interest. I was going to give it in charity. Is that right?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In principle, it is impermissible to engage in interest bearing transactions.[1] However, if one has accumulated money through interest, then the money must be dispensed off to the poor and needy, generally those who are eligible recipients of Zakat, without the intention of attaining reward.[2]
