Does converting to Islam erase one's past sins?
Question
Salaam
Q1) When a person reverts to Islam do the major sins that they committed before becoming muslim do they also get forgiven or is it only the minor sins that get forgiven
Q2) Does a persons marriage before reverting to Islam remain valid after the person becomes a muslim or will the revert have to divorce his spouse after he becomes a muslim because there was no nikah when he was a non muslim
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
1)Islam erases all sins, the minor and the major, that are committed prior to becoming Muslim.
Consider the following narration,
It is recorded that 'Amr ibn Al-'Aas (Radhiyallaahu ‘anhu) once said:
Translation: When Allah put Islam in my heart, I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: Give me your right hand so that I may swear allegiance to you. He held out his hand and I withdrew my hand. He said, what is the matter, Oh Amr? I said, I want to stipulate a condition. He said, what do you want to stipulate? I said, That I will be forgiven. He said, do you not know that Islam wipes out previous sins?[i][i]
Imam Qurtubi (656AH) states under the commentary of this hadith, that both the minor and major sins will be forgiven when accepting Islam and as such when a person embraces Islam, he/she starts with a clean slate. [ii][ii]
2)In order for us to answer your query kindly clarify the following,
What religion did both the spouses believe in when they initially got married?
What religion does the wife currently believe in?

How does a person accept Islam, and what then?
“A haraam means can never be acceptable, no matter what the outcome be. For example, one has to open up a brothel or bottle store and because of the good culture and mannersim people are accepting Islam. Will this business be…”
