Zakaat On A Pension Payout
Question
We have received a lump sum pension payout last year july / august i would like to find out when would zakaat be payable on the money. We usually calculate our zakaat every year during ramadaan .
Answer
From your statement, “We usually calculate our Zakaat every year during Ramadhaan” we understand that you have always possessed the Nisaab and therefore have a fixed date in the month of Ramadhaan on which you discharge your yearly Zakaat.
If you received a lump sum last year after the month of Ramadhaan (and you still have the funds) then Zakaat on this lump sum will be due on your fixed date in the coming Ramadhaan. This amount will be added on to whatever other Zakaatable funds you will have in your ownership when your Zakaat due date arrives in the coming month of Ramadhaan and Zakaat will then be discharged on this total amount. It is not necessary for a complete year to elapse on the pension funds since you have a fixed date for discharging Zakaat (due to continuously maintaining the Nisaab).
