Question

Is it permissible to install a video doorbell for security purposes?

Answer

It is not permissible to install a video doorbell. A video doorbell generally captures the image of the person at the door onto a smartphone or a similar gadget and remains stored on the device until it is deleted. This hence falls under the category of picture making of animated objects, making its usage prohibited.

عَنْ نَافِعٍ، أَنَّ ابْنَ عُمَرَ، أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ” الَّذِينَ يَصْنَعُونَ الصُّوَرَ يُعَذَّبُونَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ، يُقَالُ لَهُمْ: أَحْيُوا مَا خَلَقْتُمْ “(صحيح مسلم/رقم2108)

عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ، قَالَ: جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، فَقَالَ: إِنِّي رَجُلٌ أُصَوِّرُ هَذِهِ الصُّوَرَ، فَأَفْتِنِي فِيهَا، فَقَالَ لَهُ: ادْنُ مِنِّي، فَدَنَا مِنْهُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: ادْنُ مِنِّي، فَدَنَا حَتَّى وَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ، قَالَ: أُنَبِّئُكَ بِمَا سَمِعْتُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «كُلُّ مُصَوِّرٍ فِي النَّارِ، يَجْعَلُ لَهُ، بِكُلِّ صُورَةٍ صَوَّرَهَا، نَفْسًا فَتُعَذِّبُهُ فِي جَهَنَّمَ» وقَالَ: «إِنْ كُنْتَ لَا بُدَّ فَاعِلًا، فَاصْنَعِ الشَّجَرَ وَمَا لَا نَفْسَ لَهُ»(صحيح مسلم/رقم2110)

حَدَّثَنَا الأَعْمَشُ، عَنْ مُسْلِمٍ، قَالَ: كُنَّا مَعَ مَسْرُوقٍ، فِي دَارِ يَسَارِ بْنِ نُمَيْرٍ، فَرَأَى فِي صُفَّتِهِ تَمَاثِيلَ، فَقَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «إِنَّ أَشَدَّ النَّاسِ عَذَابًا عِنْدَ اللَّهِ يَوْمَ القِيَامَةِ ‌المُصَوِّرُونَ»(صحيح البخاري/رقم5950)
