Can I perform Nafl Salaah or should I only perform my Qadhaa?

Question

I have Qadhaa Salaah outstanding which has to be performed. Can I perform Nafl Salaah or should I only perform my Qadhaa? Can I read Tahajjud Salaah?

Answer

Your outstanding Qadhaa Salaah is a debt which you owe to Allah Ta’ala. You should therefore afford preference to your Qadhaa Salaah over Nawafil Salaah. However, if you perform Nawafil Salaah such as Tahajjud, Awwabeen, Ishraaq, etc. instead of your Qadhaa, then the Nawafil will be valid.
