Performing Taraweeh with the intention of Esha

Question

An Imaam told us that if we missed the Esha Salaah and Taraweeh Salaah has commenced, then one should join the Taraweeh Salaah with intention of performing Esha. Is this correct?

Answer

The Fardh of Esha will not be discharged by joining the Taraweeh Salaah even if one makes the intention of Esha when joining the Taraweeh Salaah Jamaat. The Esha Salaah must be performed (independently) first before joining the Taraweeh Salaah.
