Question

What are some examples of Tajweed mistakes that can invalidate Salaah from the common/short Surahs that are read in Salaah?

Answer

The Kitaabs of Fiqh state that committing a mistake or error which distorts the meaning of the Aayah completely, will nullify one’s Salaah. If the meaning is not distorted, then the Salaah will be valid.

By not observing the rules of Tajweed such as omitting Madd, Idghaam, Ihkfaa etc. one’s Salaah will not be invalidated, but to read without Tajweed will decrease the reward of one’s Salaah. In fact, Allama Jazri Rahimahullah has written that whoever recites without observing the rules of Tajweed, then he is sinful. One should therefore try to improve one’s recitation and recite correctly with Tajweed.

Also, the incorrect pronunciation of letters could lead to Salaah been invalidated. For example, in Surah Faatiha, if one reads the letter ض in word ضالين as ظ, then one’s Salaah will not be invalidated but if one reads the letter ض as د, then one’s Salaah will be nullified.
