Question

What is the stance of the Hanafi Madhab on making I’laan to perform Tahajjud in the Masjid, individually? Some state that I’laan to do so out of the home is a Bid’ah.

Answer

The Fuqaha have written that the Masajid have been built to discharge one’s Fardh Salaah to the extent that, Nawafil Salaah should be performed at home.

Similarly, the Fuqaha have written that it is Makrooh to gather people on a particular night such as the 15th of Shabaan to spend the night in the Ibaadat of Allah Ta’ala. The night of Baraa’at is indeed a night of Ibaadat yet Shariah did not approve of collective Ibaadaat in the Masjid, as such a practice was not proven from Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam or the Sahaabah, hence majority of the Ulama rejected it and considered it as a Bid’ah. How can it then be permissible to initiate a mass gathering for Tahajjud Salaah? The Muslim Ummah has faced many atrocities in the past, but none of our pious predecessors and seniors initiated such a practice.

Fataawa Darul Uloom Deoband states that there is no need to gather people for Ibaadat in the Masjid (at night), rather each one should perform Salaah, engage in Tilaawat of the Quraan Sharif, etc. individually. [Fataawa Darul Uloom Deoband Pg.172 Vol.4]

Furthermore, there is more Ikhlaas (sincerity) in engaging in individual Ibaadaat at home as this is unknown to the rest of the world. We are therefore of the view that individuals should engage in Nafl Ibaadaat within the confines of the home and not in the Masajid.
