Question

Q1. In a bathroom where the toilet and shower facilities are combined, should a person cover his head if he intends having a shower immediately after relieving himself?

Q2. If a person is stepping into the bathroom to wash his hands, to leave or to fetch something, does he still have to read the Dua and cover the head?

Q3. A person enters the bathroom to relieve himself and thereafter, make Wudhu. When would he read the Dua for Wudhu and how? Is it acceptable to recite the Dua in the mind while making Wudhu? And if he enters the bathroom to make Wudhu only, should he recite the Dua before Wudhu as well as the Dua before entering the toilet?

Answer

A1. Yes, one will be required to cover his head for the duration of relieving himself. The narration of Baihaqi states that when Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam would enter the bathroom, then he would wear his shoes and his Mubarak head would be covered. Also, it is recorded in Fataawa Hindiyya that one should enter the bathroom with the head covered. This in essence means, that one should cover the head even though he intends removing his clothes after relieving himself and taking a shower.

A2. This question has been answered above already that one should cover the head when entering the bathroom. However, if the intention is to fetch something, or merely wash the hands, then reciting the Dua is not necessary, although there is no harm in reciting the Dua. Mullah Ali Qari Rahimahullah has written in Mirqaat that with the blessings of the recitation of this Dua, a veil is cast between the person visiting the toilet and the evil Jinn. Hence, they are unable to see one’s private parts. [Mirqaat Pg.361 Vol.1]

A3. The Fuqaha have written that when one is in the bathroom which is a place of impurity, then one should not verbally recite any Duas or take the Name of Allah Ta’ala, rather one should recite in the heart without moving the lips. In conclusion, there is no harm in reciting the Wudhu Duas in one’s heart, hence you may continue with the practice of reciting the Wudhu Duas in your heart. You should commence recitation of the Wudhu Duas when commencing Wudhu. However, it is recorded in Mirqaat that Duas can be recited before entering the bathroom as well.
