Qurbani FAQ’s (2/14)
Question
Upon whom is Qurbani Wajib (obligatory)?
Answer
Qurbani is Wajib (obligatory) on every Muslim who is:
a) Of sound mind – and mature (has reached the age of puberty),
b) Non-Traveller (i.e. Muqeem – not a Shari’ traveller)
c) Possesses the Nisaab amount (612.36 grams of silver) or its equivalent value i.e. R25304.17 as of 25 May 2026, after deducting one’s basic necessities and debts, on any of the three days of Qurbani, i.e. 10th, 11th and 12th of Zul-Hijjah.
Unlike in the case of Zakaat, this amount doesn’t need to be in one’s possession for a complete lunar year.
Where scholars differ, it’s safer to take the more cautious view.
