Question
How much wealth does a person need to have in order for Hajj to be compulsory?
Answer
For Hajj to become obligatory (fard) upon an individual, they must possess sufficient wealth to cover their expenses for the journey of Hajj, including transport, accommodation, and food, from the time of departure until their return. This amount should be more than one’s basic needs and the needs of their dependents.
Moreover, if the individual has a spouse, children, or other dependents under their care, it is necessary for them to leave behind adequate financial means and support for the dependents’ maintenance during the period of Hajj.
If these conditions are met, the individual is physically and mentally capable and has the requisite visa, the undertaking the pilgrimage of Hajj becomes compulsory. (Shaami 2: 459)
