Ta'ziyah (sharing condolences with the bereaved)
Question
My uncle passed away few months ago and I would like to know after burial what needs to be done. Some people have gathering at home for 3 days and some people have gathering for 13 days and some people have gathering for 40 days could you please tell me which group is correct. Also people have told us to have a special dua on 40 days then on 6 months of the death and the last one at 1 year after the death. Can you please tell us what is the correct thing to do?
Answer
It is Sunnah to make ta'ziyah (sharing condolences) with the bereaved till the third day. However, holding a function at the home of the deceased (e.g. after 3 days, 13 day, 40 days, 1 year, etc.) is not an established practice and hence should be omitted.

How long may family members mourn?
“The sunnah method of sharing condolences with the bereaved is to make dua for them and the deceased. You may sympathize with them by saying, "May Allah Ta'ala assist you and bless you with sabr (patience) and forgive the marhoom…”
