Zakaat on precious stones besides gold and silver
Question
Is zakaat compulsory upon platinum, gems, rubies, diamonds, sapphires, etc?
Answer
Zakaat is not compulsory on precious stones and metals besides gold and silver, unless they were purchased with the intention of resale.

(لا زكاة في اللآلىء والجواهر ) وإن ساوت ألفا اتفاقا ( إلا أن يكون للتجارة ) والأصل أن ما عدا الحجرين والسوائم إنما يزكى بنية التجارة (الدر المختار 2/273)
وأما اليواقيت واللآلئ والجواهر فلا زكاة فيها وإن كانت حليا إلا أن تكون للتجارة كذا في الجوهرة النيرة (الفتاوى الهندية 1/180)
(ولا زكاة في الجواهر واللآلىء) قال في الدر الأصل أن ما عدا الحجرين والسوائم إنما يزكي بنية التجارة عند العقد (حاشية الطحطاوي على مراقي الفلاح صـ 718)
وأما اليواقيت واللآلئ والجواهر فلا زكاة فيها وإن كانت حليا إلا أن تكون للتجارة (الجوهرة النيرة 1/123)
(لا زكاة في اللآلئ والجواهر) كالعل والياقوت والزمرد وأمثالها كذا في الكافي (إلا أن يكون للتجارة) كذا في التتارخانية (درر الحكام 1/175)
