Question

I am working in a general insurance company as a loss adjuster which means that I assess loss of vehicle at the time of claim. Is it halaal or haram for me to work in a general insurance? As per my opinion, I am not in direct sales but I am doing the work which removes gharar from it as I assess the loss and do not allow additions or reductions as per terms. Also, I heard that if a company is owned by a Hindu, we can work in that insurance company.

Answer

Insurance is a combination of interest and gambling and thus haraam. There are severe warnings sounded in the Ahaadith for the one who gets involved in these grave sins. Hence, it is not permissible for you to work for an insurance company as their entire operation revolves around haraam. Through you assessing the loss and giving a report to the company, the company will accordingly pay the client. Hence, you are promoting and aiding in the sin of interest and gambling which the insurance company is involved in. The wealth earned through aiding and promoting haraam will also be haraam. There is no difference in the ruling between one working for an insurance company owned by Muslims or non-Muslims.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
