Question

We know that Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) was sent as a mercy for everyone from a verse in the Quran in Surah al Anbiya, verse 107. If he is mercy then why do we need to send salutations and mercy upon him?

Answer

Everything happens by the command of Allah Ta`ala. Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) is an embodiment of mercy by the command of Allah Ta`ala. Similarly, it is a command of Allah that we send salawaat (salutations) on him. Our salutations are more or less a token of acknowledgment and showing some level of gratitude for his favours upon mankind.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
