Keeping a qadha fast on the day of Aashura
Question
If one fasts on the ninth and tenth or tenth and eleventh of Muharram with the intention of a qadha fast, will one receive the reward of the fast of Aashura?
Answer
If one has qadha fasts, then it is better for him to keep the qadha fasts rather than keeping nafl fasts. However, if one keeps nafl fast despite having qadha fasts, it is permissible and the nafl fast will be valid.
As for keeping Qadha fast on the day of Aashurah, then Mufti Rasheed Ahmad Ludhyaanwi (rahimahullah) mentioned in Ahsanul Fataawa that since this nafl fast is kept to make shukr to Allah Ta’ala, if one fasts on this day with the intention of qadha, one will not acquire the virtue of fasting on the day of Aashurah.
However, in Al-ashbaah wan Nazaair, it is mentioned that according to some ulama, if one keeps a qadha fast on this day with the intention of also acquiring the virtue of Aashurah, then one will acquire the virtue of fasting on the day of Aashura.
And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
