Question

Most countries today have set the legal minimum age of marriage at 18 or higher. In light of the hadith commanding obedience to those in authority so long as it is not in disobedience to Allah, does this mean that we as Muslims are required to follow these laws regarding marriage age? What is the opinion of majority scholars?

Answer

This law is against the laws of Islam. Hence, one will not follow this law. Rather one will follow the law of Allah Ta‘ala.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.

Where scholars differ, it’s safer to take the more cautious view.
