Question

Is zakaat fardh on redundant stock?

Answer

If redundant stock refers to that stock which one is unable to sell quickly but is kept with the intention of resale, then zakaat is fardh on such goods. And if redundant stock refers to that stock which one no longer intends to sell, then this wealth no longer remains stock of trade. Hence, zakaat will not be compulsory upon it.

( لا يبقى للتجارة ما ) أي عبد مثلا ( اشتراه لها فنوى ) بعد ذلك ( خدمته) (الدر المختار 2/272)

الزكاة واجبة في عروض التجارة كائنة ما كانت إذا بلغت قميتها نصابا من الذهب أو الورق يقومها بما هو أنفع للفقراء والمساكين منهما (مختصر القدوري صـ 57)
