Sitting Cross-Legged In Qa’dah

Question

If a person sits cross-legged in the Qa’dah posture of Salaah, what is the status of his Salaah?

Answer

The Sunnah method of sitting in Qa’dah (for a man) is to sit flat on the left foot, while keeping the right foot upright and the toes facing the Qiblah. Hence, sitting cross-legged in Qa’dah will be against the Sunnah method and therefore has been classified as Makrooh-e-Tanzeehi by the Fuqaha. The Salaah will be regarded as valid, however, with Karaahat.

NOTE: The above classification of Makrooh-e-Tanzeehi is when one sits cross-legged without a valid Shar’ee excuse. If one has a genuine, Shar’ee excuse, sitting cross-legged in Qa’dah will not be regarded as Makrooh-e-Tanzeehi, but rather will be permissible without any Karaahat.
