Cannabis use for pancreatitis
Question
I suffer from chronic pancreatitis , the worst of which put me in a coma. I am not terminal but also not in good health, and have tried alternatives such as cupping and turmeric capsules with no change. My pancreatitis entails severe abdominal pain at the onset of the attack. Which usually results in my admission for pain management, usually with sedative drugs. I would like to know if my case does qualify me to attempt these cannabis capsules or oils for pain management, without taking sin or going against Shaària law. If so could you please lay out some guidelines upon use , may i still take whudu, read Salaah etc. I require clarification as i know that it is an intoxicant and therefore not permissible.
Answer
Every form of cannabis treatment is not intoxicating. The forms that are intoxicating must be prescribed by a health practitioner for it to be permissible and taken as per their instruction. You have mentioned that you have tried many treatments without success. As such, if a health practitioner prescribes cannabis as a viable treatment for you, it would be permissible to use.
The Islamic ruling with regards to the validity of Wudhu and Salaah is that if a person uses an intoxicant but does not become intoxicated, i.e. they still retain some level of control and are able to differentiate between right and wrong, their wudhu will not break and Salaah in this condition will be valid. However, if a person uses an intoxicant and gets intoxicated, thereby losing control and the ability to differentiate between right and wrong, the wudhu will break and Salaah will not be valid in this condition. (Mahmoodiyah p.136 v.8)
Note: The consumption/intake of intoxicating substances is Haraam whether one gets intoxicated thereby or not. The dispensation for using intoxicants is only for reasons considered legitimate in Islam, as in the case of medical treatment.
