At what speed should the hearse be driven?

Question

What speed must the hearse be driven? Normally the hearse is driven slowly at around 80km to the qabrastan, however when transporting the body from the hospital to the ghusal facility or when traveling a long distance from Harrismith to Durban, the hearse is driven fast.

Answer

Those driving the hearse should ensure that they do not drive it at such a speed that causes the body of the deceased to be shaken about. The Hadith commands that respect and sanctity should be shown to the deceased as is shown to a living person.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.

( وإن كان كبيرا حمل على الجنازة ويسرع بها بلا خبب ) أي عدو سريع ولو به كره

قال الشامي : قوله ( بلا خبب ) بمعجمة مفتوحة وموحدتين وحد التعجيل المسنون أن يسرع به بحيث لا يضطرب الميت على الجنازة للحديث أسرعوا بالجنازة فإن كانت صالحة قدمتموها إلى الخير وإن كانت غير ذلك فشر تضعونه عن رقابكم والأفضل أن يعجل بتجهيزه كله من حين يموت بحر قوله ( ولو به كره ) لأنه ازدراء بالميت وإضرار بالمتبعين بحر (رد المحتار 2/231)
