Taking a commission for referring people to an insurance broker
Question
A friend of mine has his own business as an insurance broker. I am in the motor industry. If clients require insurance for their vehicles, I forward their information to him. He provides them with insurance and pays me R1000 commission for every client that accepts insurance. I would like to know if I could use that money.
Answer
Insurance is haraam in Islam on account of the elements of gambling and interest being found in it. It is not permissible for one to sell insurance policies as well as buy insurance.
Similarly, it is not permissible for one to support and promote this haraam business in any way. Hence, it is not permissible for you to refer people to the insurance broker and nor is it permissible for you to take a commission for your referral.
And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
