Hadith stating that fasting on the day of Arafah equals the fasting of 2 years
Question
Is there an authentic Hadith stating that fasting on the day of Arafah equals the fasting of 2 years (as appears in Tanbeehul Ghafileen, baab 39, fadlu ayyaamil ashri)?
Answer
Yes, this is correct. This is established in the Hadith reported in Al-Mu'jamul Awsat of Imaam Tabraani (rahimahullah) and Sunan Kubra of Imaam Baihaqi (rahimahullah).
Hazrat Abu Qataadah (radhiyallahu 'anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam) mentioned, "The (reward of the) fast of the day of Arafah is equal to (the reward of fasting for) two years and the (reward of the) fast of Aashura is equal to (the reward of fasting for) one year." (Sunanul Kubra #2819)
And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
