What the Darul Iftas say

“1) Yes, that is correct. One may terminate a Sunnah or Nafl fast by the request of a guest and one will have to make Qadhaa of it. 2. One may make intention for a Sunnah fast up until Dahwatul Kubra. Dahwatul Kubra (half the day) refers to the halfway point when the day is calculated from Subah Saadiq until sunset.”

Ibn Masood — Breaking A Sunnah Fast · 30 May 2026

“If one intended that if he wakes up for sehri then he will keep the nafl fast, but he did not wake up, then it is not compulsory upon him to fast for that day. However, if he wishes to fast, it is permissible for him to do so.”

Mufti Online — Making qaza of a nafl fast if one made the intention to keep it but didn't wake up for sehri · 20 May 2023

“In principle, fasting in the last ten days of Ramadhan is a requisite for the validity of the Sunnah I’tikaaf. If a person is unable to fast during whilst in I’tikaaf, the Sunnah I’tikaaf will not be valid.”

Ask Imaam — Elderly person intending to perform Sunnah I’tikaaf without fasting · 15 Apr 2023

“Due to the Qadha fasts being Fardh, they hold priority over the Nafl fasts and you should try to give due importance to your Qadha fasts. However, this does not mean that you are not permitted to keep any Nafl fasts at all. It will still be permissible for you to keep Nafl fasts and you will attain the rewards of these fasts.”
