When making wudhu, how should the fingers be positioned during masah of the head?

Question

When making wudhu, how should the fingers be positioned during masah of the head? I have heard some ulama saying masah of head should be made with all 5 fingers with an open hand, or some say masah of head should be made with 3 fingers (middle ring and baby fingers). Please advise.

Answer

The first method is preferred.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.

(ومسح كل رأسه مرة) مستوعبة فلو تركه وداوم عليه أثم (وأذنيه ) معا ولو (بمائه) (الدر المختار 1/ 120-121)

(قوله: مستوعبة) هذا سنة أيضا كما جزم به في الفتح ثم نقل عن القنية أنه إذا داوم على ترك الاستيعاب بلا عذر يأثم قال: وكأنه لظهور رغبته عن السنة قال الزيلعي: وتكلموا في كفيفة المسح والأظهر أن يضع كفيه وأصابعه على مقدم رأسه ويمدهما إلى القفا على وجه يستوعب جميع الرأس ثم يمسح أذنيه بأصبعيه اهـ وما قيل: من أنه يجافي المسبحتين والإبهامين ليمسح بهما الأذنين والكفين ليمسح بهما جانبي الرأس خشية الاستعمال فقال في الفتح: لا أصل له في السنة لأن الاستعمال لا يثبت قبل الانفصال والأذنان من الرأس (رد المحتار 1/121)

(ومسح كل الرأس مرة) وكيفيته أن يضع كفيه وأصابعه على مقدم رأسه ويمدهما إلى قفاه على وجه يستوعب جميع الرأس ثم يمسح أذنيه بأصبعيه (درر الحكام شرح غرر الأحكام 1/11)

والأظهر أنه يضع كفيه وأصابعه على مقدم رأسه ويمدهما إلى قفاه على وجه يستوعب جميع الرأس ثم يمسح أذنيه بإصبعيه (تبيين الحقائق 1/5)

الاستيعاب في مسح الرأس سنة وصورة ذلك أن يضع أصابع يديه على مقدم رأسه وكفيه على فوديه ويمدهما إلى قفاه (فتاوى قاضيخان 1/16)
